  Power Breakfast March 6, 2008
When it comes to immigration, Republicans just want to be heard.

Good morning from Capitol Hill, I'm Todd Zwillich this is Power
Breakfast from Capitol News Connection.

The Senate Budget committee marks up its version of the Budget
resolution today. Reaching agreement on the budget is never easy. Some years Congress doesn't get a resolution at all. Throw immigration controversy into the mix, and it's bound to get even tougher.

Jodi Breisler has more. Conservative Republican Senators announced 15 enforcement bills at the same time President Bush was endorsing John McCain.

Not only do they want to put pressure on their new Presidential nominee, but the Senators may try to add some of the legislation to the budget bills on the floor next week. Texas Republican John Cornyn says the move is more to garner attention than actually pass legislation

Cornyn- :08 "I think this is more of a signal than it is done with a
realistic hope that we're actually going to get it done before the
Presidential election."

Speaking of touchy issues, House Democrats were hoping to take another swipe at passing a new ethics bill today. Plenty of lawmakers of both parties don't like the bill. Democratic aides say it's been postponed...again...until next week.

Senate Democrats hope to get a final vote toughening up the Consumer
Product Safety Commission.

Meanwhile the Iraq war needs money again. It's already time to think
about the next spending supplemental. Deputy Secretary of State John
Negroponte testifies in House appropriations.

And finally, as Pennsylvania starts its turn on the primary
merry-go-round. Back in Washington, there are signs of fatigue. More
than one lawmaker said this week they're ready for the race to be over.

Some actors can sympathize....for instance Tom Hanks.

HANKS Listen I wish the election was being held tomorrow just cause I'm bored. I made my decision. Actually when Chris Dodd pulled out I had to find a new candidate, Chris Dodd was my man. No I just wish it would hurry up. I just think we're in 24-hour news fatigue in regards to the election.

Add Tom hanks to your list of celebrity endorsers. He's behind Barack Obama.

And that's Power Breakfast from Capitol News Connection.
